by REX-NOVELISTSDamn it, even if I don’t do it that way, the ending is still death!
Zhou Wu, along with Liang Nv and her son, finally found East Liang Township, and from here on, the signs of civilization gradually increased.
After inquiring all the way, they arrived at a place called Ten Mile.
After further inquiries, they finally reached Zhou Family Village.
This was Zhou Wu’s hometown. An ox cart was a rare sight, and as they approached the village entrance, several children jumped and chased after them.
A smile appeared on Zhou Wu’s face. It felt like he had returned to the world of the living.
Although almost everyone he saw was ragged and emaciated.
According to Liang Nv’s explanation, the one in charge of the affairs of the region was the Region Chief Officer.
Zhou Wu had a bit of a headache. His travel permit was gone, how was he going to explain this to people?
The Region Chief Officer in Zhou Family Village was an old man, with snow-white hair and beard, a face full of wrinkles, and wearing coarse linen clothes.
Zhou Wu was dumbfounded. There was actually someone who recognized him here?
“You’ve even taken a wife and had a child, the Zhou family is really thriving.”
Zhou Wu smiled awkwardly, just wanting to explain, but before he could speak.
After the old man finished speaking, he turned around and left, not even waiting for Zhou Wu to respond.
Zhou Wu led the ox cart behind him, pondering in his heart.
It seemed Dugou Qingping (False) had arranged everything. It didn’t matter if he had a travel permit or not.
What he didn’t know was that the travel permit was only used on the road, only those passing through cities and government offices would check it. Who would look at that thing back in the village?
The entire village only had twenty-odd households, everyone knew everyone else.
Zhou Wu’s home was at the east end of the village, three dilapidated thatched huts, with a courtyard enclosed by a crooked fence.
Looking at the thatched huts, Zhou Wu suspected that a slightly stronger wind would blow them down.
Zhou Wu sat in the courtyard, in a daze.
Ignoring the fatigue of the journey, she told Dog Paw to go play on his own, and she began to tidy up the house.
After some time, the Region Chief Officer returned again, with a ledger in his hand.
He glanced at Zhou Wu, who was still in a daze, and without caring what he was thinking, he cleared his throat.
Zhou Wu reacted and looked at the old man blankly.
“Uncle Zhou, what land tax? I don’t even farm.”
Zhou Wu was dumbfounded. The land was indeed in his name, he couldn’t deny that.
Seeing that he had nothing to say, Liang Nv quickly stepped forward, plastering a smile on her face.
“Sir, without farming, there’s no harvest, how can we have money to pay taxes?”
The Region Chief Officer glanced at Liang Nv. After washing her face, no longer covered in black ash, although her skin was rough, it couldn’t hide its fair complexion.
It’s just that she was too skinny, with barely any meat on her body.
Zhou Wu blinked his eyes. Was it illegal not to farm when you had land?
But so much good farmland was abandoned, and no one came to investigate.
Seeing that neither of them had anything to say, the old man shook the ledger in his hand.
“Don’t just stand there, get the money.”
Liang Nv looked at Zhou Wu, Zhou Wu spread his hands.
“I don’t have a single coin right now.”
Seeing that he had admitted defeat, the old man glanced at the dilapidated courtyard, huffed and walked away.
Liang Nv anxiously kept smiling and saw him all the way out of the yard.
Zhou Wu was very disdainful and asked Liang Nv, “Do you know what kind of official that old man is?”
“Region Chief Officer.”
“What’s that? A village chief?”
Liang Nv nodded blankly, “Pretty much.”
As a result, early the next morning, four or five burly men came to Zhou Wu’s door.
The leader was a sturdy figure, with a face full of a beard, looking fierce.
He strode to the already somewhat crooked fence gate and kicked it. The already damaged gate was kicked far away by him.
The four or five men swarmed into the courtyard, ignoring Liang Nv who was sitting in the courtyard washing clothes, and scattered to find valuable things.
In the blink of an eye, all they found in the impoverished thatched huts were half a bag of grain and a few coarse linen clothes.
Seeing that the only food in the house was about to be taken away, she rushed forward like crazy and fought with the man who was carrying the bag.
The man was frightened by her madness and kept backing away.
The bearded man stood aside and, seeing this, kicked Liang Nv to the ground.
Liang Nv ignored the pain, got up and went to snatch the grain bag again.
The two men rushed over and started tearing at her.
Although she was thin, her skin was clearly fair.
This made the men stare with lustful eyes.
The men were overjoyed when they heard this and shouted, “Understood! We’ll take some extra interest as wages.”
As they spoke, the three or four men dragged Liang Nv towards the thatched hut.
Liang Nv struggled desperately, but she was like a lamb being torn apart by wolves, only able to scream and cry.
Seeing that the four men had all entered the house, the bearded man pulled the fat ox from the corner of the yard.
He put half a bag of grain and a wooden box on the ox’s back, and led the ox away.
From the thatched hut came a burst of Liang Nv’s screams, which, as if her neck had been pinched, instantly turned into a sound of flesh hitting flesh.
The bearded man led the ox far away before one of the men came out of the thatched hut, fastening his belt and wearing a lewd smile.
“A little on the plump side, but her skin is still smooth.”
Around noon, Zhou Wu returned with Dog Paw.
The two of them had caught several fish and were excitedly discussing how to cook them.
